*** All IXL exercises for the week should be completed by Sunday, September 3.***

Math: In our Math lessons this week we will be reviewing lessons taught in math so far in class. Also we will start studying decimals. We will use money to understand decimals and start exploring strategies for solving word problems.

Reading: We will continue analyzing the characters in our class novel Stone Fox, and will begin to practice making “Text-to-Text” connections in what we read.  Students will be encouraged to transfer these skills to their self-selected reading books as well, focusing on what connections they might have found with other texts.  Just a reminder that students should be bringing their Self-Selected-Reading books to school every day, along with their reading logs.

Writing: The students this week will start working on their first draft of a descriptive piece of writing using 3 main elements of Action, Feelings, and Setting.

Grammar: This week the students will be able to identify the importance of correct grammar in real-life scenarios.

Spelling: The focus of this week’s words will continue using more vocabulary words from our novel Stone Fox.  Each week the students will receive their words and phonics lesson on MONDAY, they then have the rest of the week to complete their.

Social Studies: In social studies, we will continue our geography unit, focusing on the locations of the continents and oceans.

HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT

Reducing our Waste Line” – In commitment to Discovery’s mission for environmental responsibility, we will begin a cross-curricular STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, and mathematics) project for waste reduction.  To spark our students’ understanding of issues caused by waste, we will begin a variety of activities to inspire their waste reduction.
On August 28 and August 29, the students will be collecting all their waste.  Waste will be explored and evaluated in their classrooms.   As well, the 10th grade environmental students will prepare activities that will promote waste reduction, including an Ecofriendly Lunch Day, a day which helps to encourage our students to pack a “waste free” lunch.  This will be held on Friday, September 1.   For more information about waste free lunches, please visit http://wastefreelunches.org/ .
We also encourage recycling.  Please use the recycling bins throughout campus to recycling plastic, aluminum, and paper
.
