Hello everybody!!! We hope you had a great and relaxing weekend. We would like to start by giving you a reminder that this week our students will have their Map tests. Fourth A and B students will have their reading test on  Monday 25th  and Language test on Wednesday 27th. Please take note of this to make sure your child comes to school that day and doesn’t miss the test.

This Week’s Activities

Math: This week we’ll be working on sharpening our addition and subtraction skills with large numbers and money using the standard algorithm, along with practicing problem-solving skills.

Reading:  In reading  students will be continue working in their final comic book report on our class novel Stone Fox and be ready to present their projects to the class and younger students this week.

Writing:  In writing this week the students will be taught on how to use transition words in a paragraph. We will also be working on a new trait for writing (Voice) using The Three Bears by Paul Galdone as a mentor text; students will write a letter to Goldilocks using an appropriate voice.

Grammar:  We will continue working on subject and predicate of a sentence.

Spelling:  This week we will continue using more vocabulary words from our novel Stone Fox. We will also include some vocabulary from our Motion and Design unit.  Each week the students will get their words on MONDAY, they must turn in one of the activities by Wednesday. They will have the rest of the week to complete their assignments from the spelling menu. All the activities are due on Friday, right before the Spelling Test.

Science: We will continue our investigations into force and motion, and the types of energy that contribute to the movement of an object.  Students will begin designing vehicles using simple materials in order to make them move.

 

DIRECTOR´S NOTES

Our MAP continues this week. Due to technical problems at NWEA (the MAP host server) some of our grades will have to take their Math assessments at the end of the scheduled sessions, on Friday, September 29, Monday October 2 and Tuesday October 3. MAP results, along with a guide explaining them and a goal setting sheet completed by each student, will be shared with parents at the first quarter conferences in October.

This Friday is an early dismissal day for our students due to staff professional development. Students will be released at 11:45 a.m. after following an A.M. Schedule for the morning. 

DPTO NEWS

The DPTO has begun working towards the United Nations Celebration that will take place on Friday, October 27. Parents from our varied nationalities will be contacted in the next couple of days. Please support the DPTO in innovating this trademark school event and in making it a memorable experience for our students.

FROM THE COUNSELOR

Scholastic News: Scholastic Book Club leaflets will be given out this week. This is an optional activity offered by the school, because we know you want to motivate your child to read at home.  With your purchase, our library will accumulate points to redeem more books for the benefit of your children in our school.  The due date to purchase the books online isOctober 9. The books will arrive to the school in one single delivery, and we will distribute them to the students according to their orders, approximately three weeks after the purchase due date.

This week´s activities:

Math: This week in math we will continue working with strategies to compute sums and differences mentally. We will be overestimating and underestimating numbers.

Reading: In reading this week we will wrap-up our Making connections unit while finishing reading our class novel Stone Fox.

Writing: We will begin working on a comic book about the novel Stone Fox. Students will use their knowledge of descriptive writing and incorporate dialogue to their writing.

Science: This week we will continue our ¨Motion and Design¨ unit. Students will be introduced to the concepts of force, design, and motion. We will learn about blue prints as well. Students will be exploring the given pieces to create their own vehicle design.

Important News and Reminders:

Mid-Term: Progress Reports were sent home the last Wednesday. Please make sure to send it in signed ASAP. If you were required for a conference please contact your homeroom teacher to agree on date and time for the meeting.

Environmental Council: Our fourth graders presented their speeches this past week. We would like to congratulate Luciana Nuñez and Daniela Aguirre for their outstanding performance. They both will be representing us in the Environmental Committee throughout the school year. Way to go ladies!!

Recycled-Art Project:  As part of our Go Green policy, students have been required to bring in any recycled boxes or containers in order to make an art project. We strongly recommend NOT to buy anything, just send in whatever you have at home.

The annual informational General Assembly will be held on Saturday, September 23, at 9:00 a.m. The Convocatoria went out last Friday.

Child care for those who need it will be available in the Early Childhood area.

Happy Independence Week!!! Welcome back to a new fun week of fun and learning at Discovery School. Pay close attention to this blog, we have several announcements for this week.

Our Honduran Independence Day Celebration will take place on Wednesday, September 13. The breakdown for that day is as follows:

Our Homeroom parents have organized the Desayuno Catracho for our fourth graders. Please make sure to send in what you signed up for on Wednesday. Also if you have any typical artifacts to decorate our stand please send them in by Tuesday. All students must wear typical dress/outfit. (Except for the special presenters.)
4A will be representing Gracias a Dios
4B will be representing Olancho
This is short week and we won´t have spelling class.

DIRECTOR´S NOTES

It is hard to believe that the midpoint for this first quarter is this Friday, September 8. The first Midterm Progress reports will be sent home on Wednesday, September 13.

TRAFFIC IN THE CITY as you are all aware of, the traffic in certain areas of the city is extremely difficult. We encourage all parents who drive their children to school to plan leaving at least 20 minutes prior to the normal time

CANASTAS CATRACHAS- RAFFLE BY THE DPTO
The DPTO is selling tickets for the raffle of THREE Canastas Catrachas, a beautiful basket with Honduran goodies to enjoy with a cookout over the Honduran  Independence Day weekend (gift certificate for meat included).
Please support the DPTO and its activities by purchasing tickets at only L50 a piece. You can get them from any DPTO member or from Ms. Gaby Chavez or Ms. Ruth Villalobos in the main office.
 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS
The Elementary Students elected their Nature Ambassadors last Friday, September 8. These officers will serve as the Elementary School Student Council for the 2017-2018 school year.  They will be meeting next Tuesday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. with Dr. Ketterer, Ms. Cristiana and Mr. Andrew.

Welcome back to a new fun and learning experience for this week. It is hard to believe how fast time pass. We just completed our first month in school. Among other things we would like to request parents to please let your kids to bring their electronics to class, since they are using them for researching on different projects in class. (They will be used for educational purposes only).

This week´s Activities in grade 4

IXL: Math skills:    T.4, B.1                        Language skills: A.1

Math: This week we will be having our first chapter 1 math test, on Wednesday September 6th. We will be reviewing these two first days in class, place value, comparing and ordering whole numbers and decimals. We will be also learning one more strategy for Word problem solving, Look back and check. Finally we will begin learning how to compute sums and differences mentally.

Reading: In reading this week we will continue discussing the different connections we might find in books. This time we will be focusing in text-to self connections while reading our class novel Stone Fox.

Writing: In writing the students will continue working on a new idea, writing a small descriptive paragraph including three new ingredients, (ACTION, Feelings and SETTING).

Spelling: This week we will continue using more vocabulary words from our novel Stone Fox.  Each week the students will receive their words and phonics lesson on MONDAY, they then have the rest of the week to complete their assignments from the spelling menu.

Grammar: In grammar we will be focusing on the different types of sentences and how understanding these allows writers to control the tone of their sentences in their writing pieces.

Social Studies: Students are explaining their understanding on maps and globes and different key features learned in class through different activities.
