This Week’s Activities
Math: This week we’ll be working on sharpening our addition and subtraction skills with large numbers and money using the standard algorithm, along with practicing problem-solving skills.
Reading: In reading students will be continue working in their final comic book report on our class novel Stone Fox and be ready to present their projects to the class and younger students this week.
Writing: In writing this week the students will be taught on how to use transition words in a paragraph. We will also be working on a new trait for writing (Voice) using The Three Bears by Paul Galdone as a mentor text; students will write a letter to Goldilocks using an appropriate voice.
Grammar: We will continue working on subject and predicate of a sentence.
Spelling: This week we will continue using more vocabulary words from our novel Stone Fox. We will also include some vocabulary from our Motion and Design unit. Each week the students will get their words on MONDAY, they must turn in one of the activities by Wednesday. They will have the rest of the week to complete their assignments from the spelling menu. All the activities are due on Friday, right before the Spelling Test.
Science: We will continue our investigations into force and motion, and the types of energy that contribute to the movement of an object. Students will begin designing vehicles using simple materials in order to make them move.
Our MAP continues this week. Due to technical problems at NWEA (the MAP host server) some of our grades will have to take their Math assessments at the end of the scheduled sessions, on Friday, September 29, Monday October 2 and Tuesday October 3. MAP results, along with a guide explaining them and a goal setting sheet completed by each student, will be shared with parents at the first quarter conferences in October.
This Friday is an early dismissal day for our students due to staff professional development. Students will be released at 11:45 a.m. after following an A.M. Schedule for the morning.
The DPTO has begun working towards the United Nations Celebration that will take place on Friday, October 27. Parents from our varied nationalities will be contacted in the next couple of days. Please support the DPTO in innovating this trademark school event and in making it a memorable experience for our students.
FROM THE COUNSELOR
Scholastic News: Scholastic Book Club leaflets will be given out this week. This is an optional activity offered by the school, because we know you want to motivate your child to read at home. With your purchase, our library will accumulate points to redeem more books for the benefit of your children in our school. The due date to purchase the books online isOctober 9. The books will arrive to the school in one single delivery, and we will distribute them to the students according to their orders, approximately three weeks after the purchase due date.
