Welcome back to another full week in Discovery Fourth Grade! Thanks for checking in!!

**We want to remind you that we are asking students to bring their personal electronics to school until further notice.**

**We are also requiring students to bring an old t-shirt and an old toothbrush that will be using for our Art class this Friday***

This Week’s Activities:

IXL due Sunday: Math:Q.11, R.7   Language: IXL:O.2

Math: This week in math we will learn how to add fractions with 10 and  100 as denominators, and to multiply a fraction by a whole number. We will finish the week by learning how to compare two decimals to hundredths and a review on fraction units top be ready for our chapter 10 test on Friday April 20.

Reading/Writing:  In reading and writing we will begin a research project about Jackson Pollock .  Students will be using their reading and writing periods to research using print and digital sources.  They will then create a “textbook” about  Jackson Pollock’s life and Legacy, using the nonfiction features we have talked about in class (table of contents, bold print, bullet points, etc.).

Grammar:  Students will review  Greek and Latin roots in order to figure out a word meaning.

Spelling: In spelling this week, we will be working on vocabulary words from our new social studies unit and math concepts as well.

Social Studies: This week we will continue with our economics unit and learn about the principles of entrepreneurship by watching examples of young entrepreneurs and participating in an online coffee shop simulation.  Then students will be introduced to the final economics project in which they will have to advertise our school using different strategies  and programs they can use to create their promotional.

Art: Students will be working on  a variety of color painting to create their own Pollock’s splattering painting.

Welcome back!  We hope you had a wonderful and restful vacation!  Here at Discovery, we are ready to continue learning!

On the Friday before break, 3rd quarter report cards were distributed.  Please return the envelope signed as soon as possible so we can ensure that you have received this information.  As always, feel free to contact Ms. Karen or Ms. Dariela with any questions or concerns you may have!

This Week’s Activities

IXL skills: Math R.2 & R.4       Language: O.2

Math: This week’s math focus will be addition and subtraction of fractions with both like and unlike denominators.  We will be practicing these skills and applying them to real-world problem-solving situations.

Reading: This week in reading the students will analyze and understand the different text features in an informational text.

Writing: We will continue working on our persuasive writing pieces.

Spelling: In spelling this week, we will be working on vocabulary words from our new social studies unit and math concepts as well.

Grammar: Students will identify Greek and Latin roots in order to figure out a word meaning.

Social Studies: This week we will continue with our economics unit and learn about the principles of entrepreneurship by watching examples of young entrepreneurs. Students will also  plan and innovate a way to persuade and create a innovative way to marketing the school.

Art: Students will learn about the biography of Jackson Pollock and his famous painting strategies. They will use these strategies to produce their own art piece

Hello everyone!  Thanks for checking in with us at our Grade 4 Blog Spot! 

Last week,  our fourth grade moms  sent a message  to all our parents informing about the pool and easter hunt party at Quinta Bella. Don’t forget to bring your contribution (croissants, cookies, orange juice, pink lemonade, water, and all the items you decided to sign and bring  for the party). We also want to remind you to please send   the permission slip authorizing your child to go with some of the moms who kindly offered to carpool to Quinta Bella. We will come back from “Semana Santa” and resume classes on Tuesday, April 2, as planned.  Enjoy these long vacations.

This Week’s Activities

We want to start congratulating our lovely Lía Fernanda for her birthday today! Her mom will bring cupcakes and pink lemonade during snack recess to celebrate with both fourth grades.

Math:  In math this week we will be studying mixed numbers and improper fractions, as well as comparing mixed numbers and applying our skills in problem-solving situations.

Reading:  This week students will finish working  with their group on a final project showing their understanding of the novel Because of Winn Dixie

Writing: This week we will be introducing persuasive writing, beginning with writing a model together as a class using the “OREO” graphic organizer (Opinion, Reason, Example, and Opinion).

Spelling: In spelling this week, we will be working on vocabulary words from our new social studies unit and math concepts as well.

Grammar:  In grammar this week we will be studying Greek and Latin roots in order to figure out a word meaning.

Social Studies: This week we will be introduced to  our economics unit and learn about the principles of entrepreneurship by watching examples of young entrepreneurs and participating in an online coffee shop simulation.  Then students will be introduced to the culminating economics project in which they will create their own small business.

Hello everybody! Thanks for checking back in with us! We have a lot of fun and learning planned for this week!

This week’s activities:

IXL: Math: (No IXL skills this week, instead will be using  Quizizz)

 Language: H.1 &H.2

Math:  In math this week we will be studying mixed numbers and improper fractions, as well as comparing mixed numbers and applying our skills in problem-solving situations.

Reading:  This week students will finish a final reflection of the class novel Because of Winn Dixie, and will may choose from a variety of activities where they demonstrate their understanding of the story’s plot. Students may work with a partner or individually.

Writing:  In writing, students will finish publishing their poems in our online Fourth Grade Poetry Magazine, which they will then share with the rest of the grade-level students.  Then we will introduce the format for writing a persuasive essay and use the writing process to compose our own.

Spelling: In spelling this week, we will be working on vocabulary words from our new social studies unit and math concepts as well.

Science/ Social Studies: We will finish our science unit of electricity this week with a quiz this Tuesday where students will demonstrate knowledge about all the most important concepts learned in class. Then students will be introduced to our next social studies unit about “Economics” and learn about the concepts of supply and demand.

Greetings parents and students,

Thanks for checking back in with fourth grade. Here is what’s happening in fourth grade this week:

 IXL: Math:none   Language: I.1 and I.2

 Math:This week we will begin working with fractions: reviewing what we already know, naming the parts of a  fraction, and applying our knowledge to different models of fractions–sets, regions, and number lines.

Reading:  This week students will finish our literature circle discussion groups using the class novel Because of Winn Dixie, and will work with their group on a final project showing their understanding of the novel.

Writing:We will finish  studying different types of poetry this week.  Students will then have some “workshop” time to practice writing more poetry on their own before publishing their favorite three poems in a “Fourth Grade Poetry Magazine” on Google drive.

Spelling: In spelling this week, we will be working on vocabulary words from our science unit and math concepts as well.

Grammar: Students will identify and use contractions with pronouns and To Be, as well as their negative forms.

Science:  The students will continue their study and exploration of electrical circuits, including a review game to practice for a quiz on this unit for the next week.

Happy Birthday Milla!!!

This Wednesday February 28, we will be celebrating Milla’s birthday during lunch time. Her mom will bring cupcakes and pizza this day. Please don’t pack up lunch for your child.

Reading: In reading this week we will be learning a new reading skill, Main Idea and Supporting details. The students will be able to identify it using facts and statements from paragraphs from our class novel Because of Winn Dixie.

We will also continue reading with our literature circles and be ready to wrap up the whole novel.  We also want to remind parents that students are required to read for 30 minutes every night in order to form a habit using their self-selected-reading book chosen in the library.

Math:  We will start the week by reviewing the division concepts taught in chapter 7 to be prepared for our next chapter test on Friday.

Writing: In writing this week, we will continue with our poetry unit and enjoying from learning more types of poems.

Grammar: We will be reviewing prepositions and their proper way to use them in a sentence.

Spelling: In spelling this week, we will be working on vocabulary words from our science unit and math concepts as well.

Science: In science this week students will be learning about different kinds of conductors and insulators as well as putting together different kinds of electrical circuits in our science lab.

Hello everyone! We hope you enjoyed the long weekend and were able to spend some special time with your loved ones. We want to thank all the parents, especially our homeroom moms Sandra and Josiana for coordinating these beautiful events in which we always have a blast.

Here is what’s happening in fourth grade this week:

This week’s activities

IXL: Math: E.16 & E.21      Language: C.2

Math: This week we’ll be continuing to work with division and extending our learning to divisibility rules as well as finding averages.  As always, we’ll be practicing applying these concepts to real-world problem solving and also dividing with two divisors.

Reading: We will continue using literature circles (small group guided discussions) in guided reading to discuss and analyze our new guided reading novel Because of Winn-Dixie.

Grammar:  We will review distinguish between subject and object pronouns.

Writing: We will continue studying different types of poetry this week, and begin writing our own examples of haikus, cinquains, couplets, limericks, and diamantes!

Spelling: In spelling this week, we will be working on vocabulary words from our science unit and math concepts as well.

Science: The students will conduct an experiment to test a variety of materials to discover which conductors are and which insulators are along with discussing the different types of circuits and how magnets are related to electricity.
